“Yeah, his vocal capability isn’t intimidating at all,” says Madison McFerrin.

She’s talking about her father, 10 time Grammy-winning vocalist, Bobby McFerrin. She’s joking, but she knows that being part of a musical family (her brother produces and plays keys, her grandfather was the first black man to sing at the Met) is going to bring comparisons.

But over the past few years, Madison McFerrin has been building a name for herself. A video version of her single, “Try”, got over a million plays on YouTube, and this year, she was set to perform at SXSW. But then the pandemic hit, and everything stopped.

So, like many artists who are also stuck indoors, she’s started performing online. But she’s also figured out a way to simultaneously put humor into her music.

On May 1st, she dropped a single called “Stay The Fuck Inside,” which is – well, about staying the fuck inside, inspired by an ice cream truck that was not respecting the need to social distance.

For the 4th installment of the Receiver series, we spoke with McFerrin to hear live renditions of her music, and to find out how she’s navigating the quarantine as an artist.
