Brillant interview to Laura Branigan at American TV news program "Nightwatch" aired on January 1983. At her height of her career, to less than a year of her wonderful debut in 1982 and still enjoying her big success with "Gloria", the talented, beautiful and smart Laura makes a stop in her busy life to talk about many interesting topics in a pleasant and interesting chat with the CBS News reporter Felicia Jeter.
The talk revolves around the great success of Laura with "Gloria" but above all to the message of the song often overlooked by it's catchy music. Laura tells the story of the original song "Gloria" originally composed and performed by Umberto Tozzi in 1979 and the message of the new lyrics written by Trevor Veitch that reflect what happens to many people in real life: they lose the essence of themselves in the frantic dynamics by the ascent. Laura expresses with great eloquence and lucidity that what happens to Gloria -the girl mentioned on the song- is what always happens in reality with many people who are in the fast lane of rise at all costs. Laura argues that, in that dynamic, "they lose the essence of themselves" trying to build something that is ultimately false, so it highlights her deep message in the song urging 'Gloria' to lower a change in her life. Following that line of the conversation, she expresses the importance of have a sense of yourself and how the fame haven't changed her. She declares how she feels, as a star, when people ask her. In this sense, she shares her perception of the link among the fame and the artists, saying that many of them lack a true essence of themselves before they enter in the music business, and that they build one from the public recognition which, being naturally inconstant, inevitably affects them.
After a commercial break, asked about her marriage with a corporate lawyer, mentions the importance of take the marriage seriously, with conviction on it's "practical" and "emotional" aspects, then she talks about her personal case and why is good for her that her husband is out of the industry helps her to equilibrate other aspects of her life.
She also remember her idols and shares her vision of the current music at that moment saying something very interesting and actual: she sees a ciclical process that repeat itself in the time reflecting what happens in society. She sees lack of emotion and the superficiallity but recognizes people always come back to the essential and adverts a positive recovery in that sense. She says the way of success wasn't so easy as it seems, she says she worked hard before she met Ahmet (and today we know that it really was) but anyway she tells she was very lucky to being signed by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun after one song remembering how happy she felt that day. Laura remembers how hard they worked to find the right material for her debut album, today we know they did it since 1980. Finally asked about the possibility of being a one-hit-wonder artist, Laura confessed that although she thought about it, she said that she has just finished her second album, she was confident of having another great letter up her sleeve: surely referred to "Solitaire" or maybe "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You." Hope you like it. Enjoy and share!.
