RIP Mary Wilson of the Supremes
Singer Mary Wilson, known from vocal group The Supremes, has passed away.
The American singer died at the age of 76 at her home in Las Vegas.
Wilson formed the group The Primettes together with Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown in the late 1950s. Two years later, the quartet signed a record deal with Motown and the group's name was changed to The Supremes.
"I am extremely shocked and saddened by this news," said Berry Gordy, founder of Motown in US media. "Mary was a pioneer, a diva, she will be sorely missed."
The Supremes are regarded as one of the most important music groups in the US and Europe. Women played an important role in the breakthrough of African American rhythm and blues music.
The Supremes were an American all female singing group and the first act of Motown Records during the 1960s. The were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts to date and America's most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. 'Baby Love' was their second no. 1 single and follow up to 'Where Did Our Love Go'.
The Supremes recorded two live shows for AVRO television in the Netherlands, in 1964 and 1968. These are a unique recordings of the Supremes, in their original line up with Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, live at the Carré Theatre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 14 November 1964.
The 1968 concert live at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, the Netherlands was on 16 January 1968 in the line-up with Diana Ross, Cindy Birdsong and Mary Wilson.
