Reggae artist Mishka was the recent guest for an installment of The Recording Academy's 5 Questions With... series. Held at The Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., Mishka discussed music education, advice for young musicians, touring, his biggest career moments, and his most recent release, Talk About, among other topics.

"Just play," said Mishka regarding his advice for budding musicians. "Don't worry about anything else when you're playing. Stay independent as much as possible, [and] hold on to your gift and to your creations as much as possible."

Born to a Bermudian father and Nova Scotian mother, Mishka was raised at sea with his singer/songwriter sister, Heather Nova, on their parents' boat where he was introduced to music by the likes of the Beatles, Jimmy Buffett and Bob Dylan through a small cassette player. "Everything I've heard blends together in what I do," Mishka has said about his style of music. "I'm a huge reggae fan but there's folk, soul, rock, and other elements in [my] music."

In 1996 Mishka met Creation Records head Alan McGee and was signed to the UK label the following year. In 1999 he released his first single, "Give You All The Love," which charted in the UK and Japan, and his self-titled debut. His sophomore effort, One Tree, was released in 2005. Mishka eventually met actor Matthew McConaughey and after learning that the two shared a deeply rooted appreciation for reggae, his third album, 2009's Above The Bones, was released on McConaughey's j.k. livin productions. That same year Mishka released Guy With A Guitar, which peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's Reggae Albums chart, and he was named iTunes' Best New Artist in the singer/songwriter category. His most recent release, 2010's Talk About, peaked at No. 2 on the Reggae Albums chart.
