The five cylinder engine isn't too common in the automotive industry, though it is an interesting engine choice. It offers more cylinders than an inline four, at less length than an inline 6, giving it good packaging abilities for FWD vehicles, and the potential for good power. Although the primary and secondary reciprocating forces are balanced vertically, there is a plane imbalance, requiring the I5 to have a balancing shaft in order to cancel out the vibrations, if desired.
