Why does first gear have the greatest acceleration?This video explains why. It is due to the multiplication of the torque through the gears, which make it easier for the car to accelerate.
Unfortunately, to maintain this high torque, the engine would need to rev high, so added gears are needed in order to travel at greater speeds.
