The English south coast town of Brighton is a thriving, pretty, culturally rich place with an ocean lapping onto its shores. Its indie scene ranks among the best in Europe: Royal Blood, The Eighties Matchbox BLine Disaster, and Blood Red Shoes all got their start by the seaside. It’s got a lot going for it. But it’s not a hub for reggae.

“Being in a rock band in 2015, you’ve got to somehow compete,” say young Brighton indie band The Magic Gang. Set yourself apart, swim against the tide and people will sit up and take notice. As part of Converse Rubber Tracks, the four-piece lived that mantra, trading England for Kingston, Jamaica and the world famous Tuff Gong Studios. They wanted something more rhythmic, something more polished, and they knew where to look.

'4,700 Miles,' directed by Ben Lankester, is the story of The Magic Gang's whirlwind trip to Jamaica’s capital. They’re joined by one of the world’s greatest rhythm sections in Sly and Robbie, who guide the band through their two-song demo and get behind the desk to take the reins. Lankester takes in everything from the expansive Brighton horizon to the sweaty confines of Tuff Gong’s recording room and back again, capturing four guys in the middle of something they hadn’t dreamed of before.

‘4,700 Miles’ is the third of four short films in the Converse Rubber Tracks series airing on Noisey each week, following the stories of four artists as they travel to world famous studios to work with legendary artists.
