Do rotary engines have VTEC? As far back as the rotary engine in the 1985 Mazda RX-7, rotary engines have had variable induction systems for greater power at higher RPM, and a more efficient burn at lower RPM. At low RPM in the 13B Wankel engine, only two intake ports are open for each rotor housing. At higher RPM when the engine load is higher, a third intake port opens up to allow for greater airflow. With more airflow, more fuel can be injected, and thus the car will create more power. The Mazda RX-8 uses a three stage variable induction system which further improves upon this idea. At low RPM, only one port is open. At mid RPM, an additional port opens for greater airflow, and at high RPM, 3 ports open for maximum airflow and power.
