Electric variable valve timing! A new technology called eVCT has revolutionized cam timing, from hydraulic to electric. Engine airflow is controlled with intake and exhaust valves. These valves are opened and closed using a camshaft, but when they open and close is a critical variable to control for engine performance, efficiency, and emissions. This is done using variable valve timing, where the camshaft position is rotated forward or backwards, correlating with the valves opening earlier or later. Traditionally, this is done hydraulically, phasing the camshaft using oil pressure. Borgwarner has implemented an electric motor to do the cam phasing, improving emissions, efficiency, and response. You also have better cold performance, because you’re not reliant on cold oil to do the cam phasing during cranking and cold starts. The new system adjusts cam timing near instantly—no waiting around for oil pressure.
