In this first-ride review of the 2026 Indian Chief Vintage, Indian Motorcycle channels the Indians of yore that we all think of when someone mentions a classic Indian Motorcycle. Specifically, this is a deliberate throwback to the Chief models of the 1940s, as evidenced by the Chief Vintage’s deeply valanced fenders, illuminated Indian Headdress front ornament, and wire-spoked wheels, which evoke the era’s iconic style, while the low-slung solo seat (not spring-mounted, unfortunately) and narrow frame complete its timeless silhouette.
Underneath the vintage aesthetics lies familiar Indian tech: an air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-Twin that produces strong low-end torque and is coupled with three selectable ride modes (Tour, Standard, and Sport) that tailor throttle response to rider preference. The bike’s 4-inch round Ride Command touchscreen brings modern convenience to the cockpit, offsetting the vintage looks.
But there's a problem. There's a certain intangible missing that makes the Indian Chief Vintage feel not-quite-done. We'll leave it to guest tester, and former Motorcycle.com staffer, Tom Roderick to tell you more.
