Montana license plates are in the news. Why? Tax evasion.
Montana doesn't have sales tax for residents, and an intentional loophole in its laws allows non-residents to get the same benefit. All you have to do is set up an LLC in the state—a cheap and easy process that doesn't even require setting foot in Montana—and you can then buy anything you want through that LLC. Like six-figure supercars, for example.
Once you do, you save tens of thousands of dollars in sales tax, register the car in the state, slap a Montana plate on it, and drive it home wherever you live. There's just one catch: it's legal in Montana, but illegal everywhere else.
