In this video, we are unboxing the newest of the Amazon e-reader lineup: the Kindle Fire. A first for Amazon in the realm of color, but certainly in line with their current Kindle ecosystem, the Fire has a lot of hype to live up to.
The 7" form factor is certainly appealing, even if the device is missing a camera, most sensors, and only has 8GB of storage. It's important to note that Amazon has been very careful not to call this a tablet, nor claim that it will be an iPad killer. Taking this into consideration, the game then turns back to the user experience on the device itself.
Once can sideload some applications (including your own launcher), but the Google Market and Apps are noticeably missing. The Amazon Market does take up some slack in this regard, and the book, video, and newstand offerings are as diverse as you would expect them to be from this content leader.
Very little is available to to the user in the realm of customization. The lockscreen rotates a set number of images, and the carousel background currently is not changeable by the user.
First impressions:
- Screen is bright and easy to look at
- No Google Market or default Google Apps
- Interface will be a real boon for new users
