Volkswagen is taking Paris 2012 as an opportunity to launch an all-new Golf. The Mk VII Golf is just that, a Golf. Visually you'd be hard pressed to identify it as anything else. The design here is more of an evolution, rather than a revolution of the paradigm.
Some may say the new Golf looks a little dull, like a beige wall, but it's a sensible ploy. This is a car born during recession -- it's supposed to be a safe bet and a good place to put your money if you want a good looking, reliable, safe car.
It, like the SEAT Leon and the Audi A3, sits on the MQB platform and comes with a variety of staple VW Group engines. A 217bhp GTI (which can crack the 0-62mph dash in just 6.5 seconds) is planned and an inevitable 'R' version will have around 280bhp, but even the most ardent of petrol heads can't fail to be impressed by the 88.3mpg, 85g/km Bluemotion eco-model. That's impressive.
Like the SEAT Leon all new Golfs get MacPherson strut suspension up front, but lower powered models receive a lowly torsion beam at the rear where a gruntier Golf will get a multi-link set up.
We're driving it in November and will let you know how it rides.
