CVTs have long been plagued as only useful for low torque applications. But Nissan's Extroid CVT is different. It's used to send the power to the rear wheels from a 3.0L turbocharged V6. Lots of torque? No problem. This is a toroidal CVT, which uses discs and rollers to transmit torque and change gear ratios. The gear ratios are changed by moving a trunnion vertically, which causes power rollers to move up and down, altering the gear ratio, whether you want more torque a higher top speed.
But it's no ordinary toroidal CVT, there's two pairs of discs, essentially doubling the transmission, meaning it can put out even more torque without durability concerns. Nissan also uses a highly specialized CVT traction oil, so that the discs can not only be lubricated and cooled, but transmit high torque forces without metal on metal contact. Check out the full details of this genius transmission!
