To you and me, the Alpinestars Phenom Leather Air gloves might come across as your average pair of black motorcycle gloves. And you know what? That’s basically true. Still, I’ve had a few black gloves in my collection, and yet these are the ones I routinely grab when I’m heading out the door.
The reason for that is the Phenom Leather Air is comfortable. The shorty design is easy to take on and off, and I don’t have to worry about whether the gauntlet will fit over the sleeve of the jacket I’m wearing. But more to the point, the goat skin construction and convenient stretch panels along the fingers of the glove means there’s absolutely no break-in time needed. These felt like “my gloves” the moment I first put them on. That said, accordion paneling along the fingers and the back of the hand help with flexibility once your hands are wrapped around the controls, and the suede inserts along the palm give you grip when working the throttle.
While nobody wants to fall down, a glove is ultimately responsible for protecting your hand in these situations. Hard armor along the knuckles helps keep them safe, and high impact zones like the side of the hand, cuff, and thumb get extra padded layers of leather to lessen the blow to the digits. The Phenom Air glove is CE-Rated EN 13594:2015, Level 1 KP. While that's certainly not up to snuff with the full-gauntlet-style GP Pro R4 (CE-Rated Category II EN 13594:2015) that we featured in a previous In Gear episode, it will offer a decent amount of protection for casual, everyday city riding. If sport riding is your thing, then you may want to graduate to a more protective set of mitts.
You get all this in a glove that costs $104.95. If you’ve read this far and would prefer to hear me talk about these gloves instead of reading about them, check out the video to see more.
