Once called "the worst car ever made," the Fisker Ocean bankrupted a multibillion-dollar company and practically ended the career of the famous designer behind it. How on earth did it even get that far? Strap in.
The Fisker Ocean was (is?) an electric SUV launched in 2023 by Fisker Inc, a company started by designer Henrik Fisker (hey, naming things is hard). Henrik was the man behind some of the most beautiful cars of the last 25 years, including the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9. So when he decided to create his own EV startup in 2016, he had enough connections and pedigree to rake in cash.
It wasn't the first time he'd tried this—in 2007, he founded a startup to make the Fisker Karma, a low-slung, plug-in hybrid GT car that got kneecapped by the Great Recession (and a hurricane) and never found its footing. In retrospect, that wasn't a great sign.
Still, Fisker Inc managed to ride the wave of investors looking to cash in on the surge of electric vehicles after 2020 and eventually pulled in billions of dollars. After a lengthy development process, the Fisker Ocean—a smartly designed, mid-market electric SUV—finally hit the market in 2023.
What most people didn't know was by that point, the wheels were already coming off behind the scenes. Sometimes literally. And a year later, Fisker was bankrupt, billions of dollars were lost, and the perception of EV startups was changed forever.
