Ah, the 1990s. Simpler times, when you knew what a big family saloon car or a hatchback was. It looked like a Ford Mondeo. Under superb engineering leadership, dowdy Ford saloons became brilliant to drive in the 1990s and the Mondeo was at the pinnacle of family car development.
And then came the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, a revolutionary tall hatch that had as much space inside as a big family car, only with a tiny exterior footprint. There was just one problem. That new footprint left it, at first, a little shaky on its toes.
But after an inauspicious start the A-Class became a great car. One which still lives on today, if not in quite the form it was first envisaged.
In this episode of the Autocar Vodcast, Middle-Aged Tread, join Matt Prior and James Disdale as they navigate the world of 1990s family motors, talking the great and the good, as well as the confusing and not so good. Just what did the 90s ever do for us, eh?
