2025 KTM 390 SMC R Review — First Ride

KTM is proving that big fun can come in little packages with this, the 2025 KTM 390 SMC R — KTM’s new “supermoto-lite” machine built to bring fun to the street without breaking the bank. Using the latest 390 Duke chassis found in the 390 Enduro and Adventure, the SMC R shrinks the SMC formula with 17-inch wheels front and back, a big front brake rotor, and dual-channel ABS with Supermoto modes. The same long-travel suspension from the Enduro model remains, allowing the SMC R to soak up all the bumps and even hit a jump or two.

The 398.7cc Single offers impressive grunt for such a diminutive powerplant, though freeway speeds start to strain the engine if you’re reaching much past 80. It should go without saying, though, that a supermoto is not meant for the highway. Ripping tight roads and kart tracks are where it shines, and the 390 SMC R proved to be a ton of fun in its environment.
