Everyone hates CVTs, or continuously variable transmissions. The reason is when they first started getting widely adopted, they used belts, which often suffered reliability problems, and they also didn’t feel great to drive. And while belt-CVTs have improved tremendously, there might be a better way. eCVTs do away with all the belts and pulleys, in favor of a single planetary gear set. When you pair this with an engine and two electric motors, you can generate basically any gear ratio you want for that engine, and it’s dead reliable and dead simple. Automatic transmissions typically use several of these planetary sets in combination for all the various gears, whereas an eCVT uses just the one. There’s a longer video explaining it all for those curious, and while it’s operation may feel complex, the beauty is truly how simple of a solution it is. Simplicity has always been beautiful, it’s why I’m proud my brain is completely smooth.
