Four friends from university entered a hackathon and came up with the foundation for a 3D avatar that could speak ASL. With the help of their mentor, Nidal, they used AWS text-to-speech tools, 3D VR products, machine learning, and hours of training to evolve the avatar to see ASL signs and translate them to text, as well as to translate the spoken word into ASL. Now an open-source project, the team is engaging with the deaf community to see where they might take this project next.
