This month, ignition helps a car dealer find one car that has everything he wants: prestige, pace and comfort; and, perhaps most importantly, room for his golf clubs!
In his time, Anthony has had more than his fair share of 911s, and he could clearly see how the Cayenne’s design aped that of Porsche’s most famous sports car. Trouble was, he could also see how the rear end was pure family car, and he didn’t think the two halves gelled together.
It was the same story inside, he said: ‘It reminds me of a 911, but it isn’t a 911; it’s a family car, so I find the instrumentation, the clutter round the steering wheel and, especially, the sports seats, totally unnecessary.’
In fact, the seats were his biggest complaint, as they incorporated a piece of metal in the bolster that dug into Anthony’s hip every time he got in and out.
On top of that, he didn’t like the fact that the two outer dials were obscured by his hands on the wheel – ‘what’s the point in having them if I can’t see them?’ – or that the rev counter was the central dial, with speedo to its left.
Mind you, once he took to the road, much of this was forgotten. He soon found out that the Cayenne does more than just look like a 911; it drives a little bit like one, too. He appreciated both the ‘outstanding’ performance and the ‘excellent’ handling.
His only real complaints were that the high level of road noise would be disconcerting on a long drive, and that he would prefer a softer and quieter ride.
