An important step in figuring out electrical problems is understanding the circuit design of the circuit you're trying to diagnose. Determining if the circuit is ground side or positive side switched is a good start when you don't have a wiring diagram handy. In this video ScannerDanner and I talk about how to determine if a circuit is ground side or positive side switched using basic electrical troubleshooting tools. Now this does not come without some drawbacks as pointed out in the video, but it will still get you started if you're trying to figure out an electrical problem. If nothing else this video shows some basic circuit design principals that you can use to increase your electrical knowledge.
