The best in-car technology makes driving safer or easier, and the winner of our 2020 What Car? Technology Award – sponsored by Thatcham Research – does both.
Driver monitoring systems sound an alarm when we’re either distracted or drowsy, helping us to refocus our attention on the road ahead – and Subaru's Driver Monitoring System is the most advanced of its kind.
Its facial recognition software keeps track of the driver’s eyes to detect whether their gaze has wandered away from the road for too long, or if you’re closing your eyes for longer because you’re feeling drowsy. When we tried the system, it was one of the most accurate systems of its kind, with clear warnings that were extremely hard to ignore.
It also uses facial recognition to recognise different drivers – automatically adjusting the seat position, door mirror angles, air conditioning and infotainment content according to your personal preferences, and saving you time on every journey.
