The Gold Standard: 50 years of the Honda Gold Wing

Fifty years ago, Honda introduced a brand new motorcycle developed specifically for the North American market to be its flagship high-performance model. When it debuted, the 1975 Gold Wing GL1000 represented the pinnacle of Honda’s technical prowess, with innovations such as a water-cooled four-stroke four-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine, underseat fuel tank and shaft drive.

While initially designed to be a performance-focused model, the Gold Wing really came into its own when customers recognized its potential as a long-distance bike, helping to establish what we would now call today a grand touring motorcycle.

That tradition continues today, with the Gold Wing as Honda’s ultimate touring motorcycle, featuring ample storage, a large wind-guiding fairing, an optional airbag system, double-wishbone font suspension, and an 1,833cc six-cylinder engine with the option of a 7-speed automatic dual clutch transmission.
