2026 Yamaha R7 First Ride Review | Small Changes, Big Upgrade

The 2026 Yamaha YZF-R7 is here, and while it might not look completely new at first glance, the updates run deeper than you think.

From revised aerodynamics and sharper styling to a stiffer chassis, upgraded suspension, and a full suite of R1-derived electronics, Yamaha has taken its best-selling supersport and refined it in all the right ways. The addition of a 6-axis IMU, ride-by-wire, and an up/down quickshifter finally brings the R7 up to modern standards — while the CP2 engine remains as torquey and usable as ever.

But do all these changes actually make a difference on the road?

After riding it up and down Palomar Mountain, I break down what’s new, what’s improved, and whether the R7 still stands out in a class that includes bikes like the RS660, Daytona 660, and GSX-8R.
