An oil change used to be the simplest car maintenance your vehicle could possibly need. It was cheap and routine. But according to recent memo leaks from Toyota and Nissan, a potential synthetic motor oil shortage could make oil changes a lot more expensive and prove just how dependent modern cars have become on fragile global supply chains.
In this episode of The Roman Report, I'll talk about why automakers are warning dealerships about shortages of 0W-8 and 0W-16 motor oil, how global instability and petrochemical supply disruptions are affecting the automotive industry, what this could mean for the used car market, and whether or not this proves that older cars are more desirable. But perhaps the most important question to answer: is a synthetic motor oil shortage something worth worrying over, or is this entire story being blown wildly out of proportion online?
