In this video we will cover how we transitioned from an early "cowboy coding" production environment, to one that was actually well managed and reproducible. In particular, we'll discuss:
- Our move to entirely separate AWS accounts, so we can script common set of configuration between them. We'll talk about how we did it while maintaining 100% uptime on our API.
- Using terraform as a simple, common means of configuring our AWS setup. We'll talk about our techniques for working with it so our infrastructure is sharable and auditable.
- Our move to running containers in production, using Docker and Amazon EC2 Container Service.
- Our switch to scripted alerting and monitoring with Datadog
We're currently just 11 engineers, and we've already immensely reduced the overhead of dealing with our production environment using this set of tooling. We want to share what we've learned and talk about what we have coming in the next few months.
