In this demo, the open source Intel® Open Volume Kernel Library (Intel® Open VKL), a collection of high-performance volume computation kernels, is used to showcase improved rendering performance compared to the default VDB plugin using two public sample models - OpenVDB Smoke and Disney Cloud. In the case of the Smoke demo, Intel® Open VKL delivers 6.1x rendering speedup over the VDB plugin, and in the Disney Clouds demo, you can see the rendering speedup is 3.7x. Open VKL is enabled through the Intel® OpenVKL plugin for RenderMan* used with RenderMan 24.4 running on an Intel® Xeon® Platinum 8380 processor.
Intel Open VKL is used by rendering and ray tracing experts to improve volume rendering applications using a wide variety of volumetric data structures and performance-optimized traversal and sampling algorithms. The library is part of the Intel® oneAPI Rendering Toolkit, which includes a suite of advanced open-source ray tracing libraries available for free.
