If you’ve experienced charging issues with your Android phone, it might be a battery problem. Slower than normal charging, fast charging malfunctioning, overheating, accelerated battery discharge, or battery: all of these issues can make using your Android harder. However, these are possibilities it is possible to plan for, and in some cases fix.

Not charging
When you plug your phone into a charger and it starts to charge but later stops, this could be caused by a number of things. First, check to see if the cable is broken. Try wiggling the cable to see if it starts charging again. Next, check the phone, cable, and charger contacts. In most cases, this will solve slow charging or stop-and-start charging. However, the phone may be the issue. The Essential PH-1 is known to be finicky with chargers. It thinks some chargers are able to fast charge, cycling between fast and slow until it stops charging. We found that most Essential PH-1 users that charge with a Pixel 2/2XL charger report zero issues.

Not fast charging
What happens when you have a phone capable of fast charging that often downgrades to regular charging? The same troubleshooting techniques from above apply, but you may want to double-check your actual charger first. Be sure that you didn’t accidentally plug in your 10W charger, especially if your phone is expecting your 30W charger.
Let’s say you did everything that was suggested, but you’re still not seeing rapid charging. Power off the phone and see if rapid charging resumes. If it does, there’s likely an app (or apps) drawing a lot of power in the background. Try updating the apps and if this doesn’t work, disable them until the OEM releases an update.
Another issue is charging while using your phone. Depending on the OEM, the ability for it to charge either rapidly or at normal speed is reduced, sometimes drastically. Some phone users have reported ghost touches or false touches when using the phone while charging. Others note that charging may take twice as long. Assume the worst and if you can, turn off the phone when charging, or at least reduce its workload while it is. The more apps you have running competing for services, the more power your phone consumes. Close the apps, and charging will be more effective.

Overheating
If you charge your phone and do intensive tasks with it at the same time, it can overheat. Users normally report overheating when setting up for the first time while plugged in, gaming, or doing another CPU-intensive task. When the phone gets too hot the battery drains faster. If your phone is too hot while charging, it’s possible for the battery to actually drain faster than it’s charging. In this case, it’s best to close or disable CPU-intensive apps and/or move your phone to a cooler environment while charging.

Battery health
As your phone ages, you may notice your battery is discharging faster, or simply can’t hold a charge for as long as it used to. This is normal wear and tear. If you find yourself complaining about this after just a few months with the phone, the problem might in fact be you.
Let’s review best practices: to optimize battery health, received wisdom had it that you wait until the phone drops below 40% charge to recharge it, and terminate charging at 80%. That reduced the time under temperature load, and cut down on charge cycles, which had the biggest impact on sustained battery health. However, today most modern phones have built in protection to manage this for you.

Swelling
All things come to an end, and smartphones have a pretty clear tell: battery swelling. Even following best practices, smartphone batteries will become less efficient, holding charges less, draining more per hour, and after a few years, even swelling. As soon as swelling occurs, your phone becomes a hazard. You should remove it from your house and dispose of it promptly.

With these tips, you’ll be able to use your phone on the go for longer. Maybe use it to like this video and subscribe to our channel? 😉
