PCIe NVMe SSDs are the tech industry’s favorite storage format due to their reliability and speed. Over time, newer generations of PCIe have emerged, but what is the difference between them? This video explains.

What is PCIe?
Peripheral Component Interconnect Express is the interface standard which connects SSDs to the motherboard. Newer PCIe generations improve on the interface’s bandwidth and speed. NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a communication interface and driver designed for high-speed data transfer between a computer’s SSD and its processor, which leverages the PCIe interface. These two work together to bring you the fast speeds you know and love.

Understanding PCIe generations
Each generational leap means progress in bandwidth, data transfer rates, and efficiency. All of these are beneficial for PC gamers and those with high-performance workloads like video editors or 3D artists.

PCIe Gen 3 has a max bandwidth of 16GB/s across 16 lanes, and a max sequential read speed of 3,500MB/s on NVMe SSDs.

PCIe Gen 4’s max bandwidth doubles to 32GB/s across 16 lanes, with a max sequential read speed over 7,000MB/s.

PCIe Gen 5 again doubles the max bandwidth to 64GB/s across 16 lanes, with a max sequential read speed greater than 14,000MB/s.

A useful fact: PCIe is backwards compatible, so for example a PCIe Gen 3 SSD in a Gen 4 or Gen 5 slot will work. However, it will only operate at Gen 3 speeds.

Which gen is best for you? That depends on your workload and budget. Professionals and high-octane gamers may need to future-proof their systems and opt for PCIe Gen 5, arguably giving them a competitive edge. Most PC and console gamers and content creators will find PCIe Gen 4 a fine balance of performance and affordability. For example, the PS5 and PS5 Pro support Gen 4 SSDs with heatsinks. PCIe Gen 3 SSDs are suitable for general computing tasks, but users are likely to find they can’t keep up with modern games or the needs of content creators.
Kingston Technology has reliable, high-performance storage solutions regardless of your choice. Offering blazing fast speeds in high capacities is the Kingston FURY Renegade G5 PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD (kingston.com/en/ssd/gaming/kin... with up to 14,200MB/s read and 11,000MB/s write speeds. Whichever generation you’re from, you have to agree that’s fast!
