The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X rog.asus.com/content/rog-xbox-... allow gamers to PC game on the go with an Xbox interface. However, their standard storage capacities and SSD speeds are lacking. This video instructs in how to improve upon that.

While you can use Kingston’s Canvas Go! Plus microSD Memory Card kingston.com/en/memory-cards/c... to store up to 1TB of games, we can improve on that performance by upgrading the internal SSD.

Getting started
You’ll need a size 0 Phillips head screwdriver and a plastic tool to open the case. You can use a guitar pick instead of a specialist opening tool. Both the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X have M.2 2280 NVMe drives inside, which makes upgrades simple. The Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (kingston.com/en/ssd/gaming/kin... has a better average read/write speed and both 2TB and 4TB capacities, so they are great upgrades. Before replacing the drive, make sure you back up any data already on the new drive, since the setup process will format it and erase all previous data.

Discharge the device battery to below 25% for safety before attempting to open it, and power it off. Place it face down on a soft surface and undo the five screws on the back panel, as well as the three shorter screws along the bottom. One of the back screws won’t come out all the way, but you need to loosen it to lift the bottom cover, then it will come out when the cover comes off. Use a Zip-Loc or similar to keep the screws together and safe. If your Ally casing won’t pop open when unscrewed, use the opening tool by sliding it along the length of the case to undo the clips. There’s a ribbon cable connecting the back panel and motherboard that you can leave plugged in, but don’t tear it while setting the back panel aside.

Inside your Ally
You need to disconnect the battery. Under the right fan is the battery connector. ROG Xbox Ally users should use the opening tool to slide the metal clip back and pull the connector up and out of its socket, while ROG Xbox Ally X users have no metal retaining clip and can just lift upwards to disconnect. Some models will need the battery removed before the SSD can be replaced, while with others, the SSD is above the battery. Removing the battery is simple, however, just unscrew the five screws and carefully ease it out.

ROG Xbox Ally owners may notice a small strip of conductive fabric stuck to the motherboard and SSD. You can carefully pull it up and remove the SSD from the slot. Feel free to discard the tape. With your new drive screwed into place, replace the battery if needed.
ROG Xbox Ally X owners will notice a black shield over the SSD. Unscrew the screw that holds the drive in place, slide the SSD out delicately, then put the new one in and resecure with the same screw.

All that remains is to plug the battery connector back in and close the device up. Make sure all the case clips snap into place and that the back panel screws are replaced. Simple!

Reinstall Windows
Next, reinstalling Windows on the new drive. Remove any SD cards, charge your Ally using the included 65W charger, then hold the volume down button while powering the device on. Your machine should boot into its BIOS menu. Press Y to enter Advanced mode. Go to the Advanced menu and select ASUS Cloud Recovery to begin the process. You’ll need to connect to Wi-Fi. The process will take a few reboots before it can be completed.

When your Ally is finished downloading and installing the disk image you can set your computer up, like it’s fresh off the box. Except now you have even more room for games!
