The 2015 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4 EcoDiesel. This is a pickup from Ram, featuring a 3.0L diesel V6 engine producing 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, which I’ll be comparing to the Ford F150, the GMC Canyon, and the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. Starting with the drawbacks, the RAM is down on ground clearance and towing capacity compared to the Ford or Toyota, and it’s heavier than the Ford or GMC. It also has the least horsepower of the group, though it does have the most torque. It’s also the most expensive as tested, at just over 50 thousand. That said, the Ram offers the best fuel economy of the group, in fact while off-road testing I was monitoring the instantaneous fuel economy and often saw it reading over 30 mpg. As test the truck is rated 27 mpg on the highway, very impressive for a full size pickup. It also offered two more gears over the competition with an 8 speed automatic. It was the journalist’s pick for top pickup, and it was my personal favorite of the group as well.

NOTE: The ground clearance of the Outdoorsman with skid-plate is 9.9 inches, better than the Ford F-150. The 8.6 in figure comes from the base model.
