Car tires perform best when they are evenly loaded. Wider tires and even 50/50 weight distributions help allow for even pressure among the tires, allowing for better grip. As load increases on a tire, the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road decreases, thus the amount of lateral grip the tire has decreases. This video helps to explain why, which is a result of the viscoelastic properties of the rubber used in the tires. As the polymer chains which make up the tire stretch out, they become less resistant to additional strain.
