Every once in a while you run into a fuel gauge that just doesn't read correctly. When I run into this problem I usually go looking to the sending unit in the tank. I'll admit that it's not always effective but at least for me, the odds are good that's where I'll find the problem. In addition to that, I usually find that all I have to do is work the wiper arm and check the resistance and I find that's all I need to do and it works again. That may not be the case for you but it's at least worth a try since it doesn't cost you anything. In addition to learning how to test a fuel sending unit you also get a look at what's involved in removing the fuel pump in this vehicle. It's good information should you find yourself in need of replacing a fuel pump on a full sized Ford like this. Here's some useful links for you.
