You may have noticed that in recent years our roads have been overcome by SUVs; in fact, in 2021, SUVs and crossovers made up nearly half of global new car sales. The Toyota Aygo X aims to extend the dwindling appeal of the city car segment with its increased ride height and SUV-inspired styling. However, unlike most small cars, the Aygo retains a fuel-sipping petrol engine – ideal for those who aren’t quite ready to go electric. So, is this the perfect car for this particular moment in time? Or is the tiny Toyota an SUV-sized slip-up? Richard Ingram finds out.
