From the 1980's through the early 2000's, the Mercedes SL absolutely dominated the luxury convertible market. It was comfortable, well-made, and good looking, with very little competition from other brands. But then Mercedes did the unthinkable: they made it ugly. Customers went elsewhere, to the BMW 6 and 8 series, to the Porsche 911, and to the Bentley GT. All of a sudden we stopped seeing the SL on the road so much. Now, for 2023, Mercedes has brought out an all-new SL, with a new direction: a 2+2 configuration, all-wheel-drive, and a much better looking body. On the surface the new SL is absolutely the right move, but does all the tech take away from the driving experience?
