To adequately design for the expression of emotions we need to look beyond the mere detection and transmission of signals and symbols and realize that emotions exist in a rich labyrinth of contextual and social rules. The social world engenders tensions on the expression of emotions that we must fully realize before we are successful in the design of communicative and collaborative systems. In this talk I present findings on the tension between emotion awareness and invisibility in the expression of emotions between medical personnel in an emergency room. In addition, I present early findings on the tension between personal reflection and social communication during the use of a novel emotional communication device
