As of January, it is now a crime to unlock a phone without the consent of the wireless carrier. Although most carriers do unlock phones once the contract has been fulfilled, under this new law, they are not required to do so. Many consumers are opposed to this new law, including the White House who recently drew up a petition to make phone unlocking legal again.
