Social interaction around photos: How do the affordances offered by technology affect group behavior

Technologies for collocated groups have the potential to influence how their users interact with one another, through the affordances that they offer. The two studies presented here explore how two factors, which were predicted to influence social interaction, affect group behaviour during collocated photo sharing. The first study involves a manipulation of levels of interpersonal awareness within groups, while the second controls equality of access to input devices. Both factors were found to significantly affect high-level attributes of conversation and user experience. The findings have implications for the design of technologies to support enjoyable and sociable group interactions.
