NASA will produce the first ever live 4K video stream from space during a Super Session at the 2017 NAB Show using AWS technology. The live feed from 250 miles above Earth will be encoded and delivered by AWS Elemental software on board the ISS and on the ground at Johnson Space Center. AWS Elemental will also deliver a public live stream of the event via an AWS workflow that includes AWS CloudWatch, Amazon Route 53, and Amazon CloudFront.

The live 4K stream will include live interaction with NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson on the International Space Station and Sam Blackman, CEO and co-founder of AWS Elemental at the NAB Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and will last about 15 minutes. This interaction will provide context for the significance of advanced video and cloud workflows enabling scientific research, discovery and observation in space. This live 4K stream will then shift to a LVCC-based panel discussion moderated by Carolyn Giardina from the Hollywood Reporter with NASA astronaut Dr. Tracy Caldwell Dyson and Hollywood and technology leaders including Bernadette McDaid, Head of Development, VR & AR Bau Entertainment; Khawaja Shams, VP of Engineering for AWS Elemental; Rodney Grubbs, Imagery Experts Program Manager, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center; Dr. Dave McQueeney, Senior Principal Investigator, IBM Watson Group.
