Microsoft Research India, in collaboration with IISc and University of Southern California (USC), organized a two-day workshop on exploring the use of artificial intelligence for enabling social good. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, and this rise in AI applications has stimulated significant interest from the public, media and policy makers. This increasing attention, however, is often focused on the negative consequences of AI, overlooking the societal benefits that AI can deliver. This workshop focused on that missing perspective: how AI can help solve difficult societal challenges, in assisting low resource communities, in driving sustainable use of resources and overall improving quality of life in both urban and rural settings. To enable this, we invited leading academic researchers working on these problems to share their work. In addition, we invited a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including social work researchers, policy organizations, and NGOs. The workshop was divided into five major thrust areas: public health and welfare, sustainability, inclusive digital society, innovations for rural areas, and urban planning and transportation.
