Welcome to your Fire tablet. In this video, we show you how to get started with your Fire tablet HD 8 or HD 10 and how to turn on the Amazon VoiceView screen reader for the first time.

If you’re just getting started with your Fire tablet, you can learn more about the location of buttons and their functions by checking out the video on unboxing your Fire tablet HD 8 or HD 10.

To turn on your Fire tablet:

1. Press and hold the power button until you hear a chime as the screen turns on.

You can now activate the VoiceView screen reader at any time.

VoiceView is a screen reader that speaks on-screen text out loud on Amazon devices. It’s designed for people who are blind or who have low vision, when browsing movies and TV shows, navigating menu options, and customizing settings.

To activate VoiceView:

1. Press and hold the power button until you hear an alert sound.
2. Then, hold two fingers slightly apart on the screen for five seconds to enable VoiceView.

You can also activate VoiceView in Settings, then Accessibility.

After VoiceView is activated, the screen reader will describe what is happening on screen until it’s deactivated. You can de-activate VoiceView at any time using those same gestures.

Once the VoiceView screen reader is activated, a menu will appear asking you to select your language. English is the default selection, but the tablet will read aloud the other languages to choose from and how to navigate and select the right language and dialect. Once you select a language and dialect, the VoiceView tutorial will start.

The tutorial provides the basics for how to navigate with VoiceView, including exploring screens, activating items, and other gestures.

Exit the VoiceView tutorial at any time by:

1. Navigate to the Exit function at the bottom left of the screen, and then double tap.

Once your Fire tablet setup is complete, you can go back to the tutorial at any time, by navigating through:

1. Settings
2. Then, Accessibility
3. Then, VoiceView Screen Reader

Once you exit the VoiceView tutorial, your Fire tablet will automatically scan for available WiFi networks. A keyboard will be activated to enter your WiFi password. Once WiFi has been activated, you’ll next register your device through your Amazon account or create a new one.

You can use VoiceView to read the on-screen login text.

During Set Up, your Fire Tablet will look for, download, and install any available updates. This may take a few minutes. Once complete, VoiceView will relaunch if it was active before installing available updates.

Now, you'll be taken through a few more steps to customize the set-up of your Fire Tablet. You’ll be able to:

* Set options to engage location services, auto save photos and videos, and save WiFi passwords.
* Make your tablet kid friendly.
* Set a lock PIN.
* Enjoy free trials of Goodreads, Audible, and Kindle Unlimited.
* Add books, TV shows, and movies already included in your Prime Membership, if you have one.
* And download additional apps.

To conclude Set Up, you’ll be offered a short Alexa tutorial to use your voice to open apps, ask questions, play music and videos—even when the screen is off. The activation screen is default set to On.

You can always go to Settings, then Alexa to make any changes.

Once the setup of your Fire tablet is complete, the home screen will appear. A number of Amazon apps have been pre-installed, including Amazon shopping, Amazon Alexa, Prime Video, Kindle, Audible and more.
