The inline-six cylinder is the perfect engine - why? Well when it comes to creating a balanced, smooth running engine, four things are critically important. First, you need to balance out the the motion of the pistons moving up and down, called primary forces. Second, you need to balance out the uneven acceleration these pistons experience, called secondary forces. And third and fourth, you need to balance out any rocking motions created by these primary and secondary forces, respectively. The inline-six cylinder balances out all of these perfectly, unlike almost every other engine variant out there, and it does it with just a single cylinder head, for maximum simplicity. But the good news doesn’t stop there: pair two of these engines together, and you can receive the same benefit - yes, the glorious V12, perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
