Ford built an atomic car. GM built a jet fighter-inspired turbine car. Nissan built a rotating crab-walking EV pod. And somehow, all of them thought they were pointing toward tomorrow. Today, I’m exploring five wild concept cars that got the future wrong. Whether through hubris or optimism, these five cars predicted a different tomorrow than the one we actually got, and in the process, revealed a lot about the direction the automotive industry could have gone.

From nuclear power to turbine engines to hydrogen fuel cells and the most customizable car never built, these are the concept cars that promised futures that were flashy, optimistic, and often completely detached from reality. But could some of these cars have actually succeeded? What did these five concept cars actually get RIGHT about the future? And what did they ultimately get wrong?
