Motorola's Moto X might not wow you with its specs, but it brings some fresh new features. I don't yet own a Moto X, but I do want to take advantage of some of the cool new stuff it does. One of my favorites is Active Notifications. Luckily the Android development community is very active, and a developer called Great Bytes Software has come up with something very similar to what the Moto X does and put it in the Play Store. It's called DynamicNotifications.

The "problem" with most notifications is the fact that they are presented to you with a sound and a flashing LED -- some devices don't even have that any more. Active Notifications light up your screen and show you the notification, then fade away. While this will consume a little more power since you're powering the screen, it's not much, especially when you consider that checking what the notification is requires turning on the screen anyway.

That's what DynamicNotifications does, but it's smart about how it does it. It doesn't light up when your phone is in your pocket, purse, or face down, and even gives you the option not to display notifications at night when you're probably asleep.

Using the app is simple, after you install it and run through a quick configuration, whenever you get a new notification it's displayed on your screen. From there you can swipe up to see more details about the alert, swipe down to unlock the device (which will take you to whatever lock screen you have set up), or swipe left to dismiss it.
