The HTC Droid DNA bears a confused and somewhat tragic legacy. Born of Verizon's desire for an "ultimate Droid," the device represented far more than a retooled HTC Butterfly when it was announced at a New York City event last November. Back then, the Droid DNA was the first -and the only- 1080p smartphone to hit the United States, and the first device to adopt a five-inch display while rejecting the burdensome "phablet" moniker.
The Droid DNA could have been a superstar, but -as we discussed at length in our After The Buzz episode covering the device- carrier exclusivity and other factors limited its exposure in the States. Now, with the arrival of the UltraPixel-packing, 1080p-toting, beveled-edge-boasting HTC One, the Droid DNA looks relegated to the role of an also-ran in the race for HTC's biggest and baddest Android smartphone.
With Verizon delaying adoption of the new One, Droid DNA owners happy on Big Red aren't yet feeling the burning of their gadget lust, the insistent urge to drop a stack of Benjamins on the retail counter and demand their own slab of hot new aluminum. But the day will likely come when the One does find its way to Verizon, and these customers will find themselves full of questions. Questions like: do those front-firing speakers really make a difference? How does that 4MP "UltraPixel" camera measure up to my DNA's 8MP shooter? How much better is Sense 5 than Sense 4?
We can't address all those questions - not completely. Not yet. But on the long road to our full review, we can certainly try to answer some of them. So hit play, sit back, and get to watching: it's HTC versus itself, and it's about to get nasty.
