The next evolution of Microsoft's Hotmail free service was revealed today and it will be now called Outlook.com. The redesign and rebranding of Microsoft's free web-based email service is very "Metro" styled and looks a lot like some of the apps included in the Windows 8 Release Preview. Many parts of the interface seem very touch-friendly, so we thought we'd try it out on a Windows 8 Tablet PC. Currently only the email and people portion of the new Outlook.com are designed with the new Metro theme, but it looks like SkyDrive and the Calendar sections are on the list for the new makeover. Using Windows 8, the new design feels like it's an actual Metro app when you use it from within the Metro version of IE 10. Everything works great using touch except for a few things like scrolling through the Messaging list of online friends, and trying to access the hidden Outlook menu in the upper left corner. Drag/dropping emails into subfolders doesn't work via touch either, but you can use a stylus for that if your tablet includes one. Overall Outllook.com works very nicely in a Windows 8 tablet. It's great to see this new free email service boasting such a clean and easy-to-use new design.
