London Innovation Series 2017
The session starts with an introduction to TfL, its large scale of operations and the growing user demand for public transport information on the go, generating demand for various, niche mobile apps. TfL started its Open Data initiative in 2007 to encourage transparency, reach, niche products and economic benefits by boosting employment and innovation. TfL’s open data covers over 200 elements including bus, tube and over ground movements. It also covers data for roads – including casualty, collision and vehicle raw data files and accident geo-location data – available via its Unified API hosted on AWS cloud. Among other things, the presentation lays out that TfL’s Open Data has been used by c.10,000 developers to produce c. 600 apps that are used by c. 40% of Londoners. This, in turn, has saved users time worth £30m-£116m per annum and created c. 1,000 jobs.
