Open government data is increasingly being recognized as a critical resource for value creation. Governments and international institutions, like the OECD, are moving towards open, machine readable government data as a way to empower the public, industry, and academia to use government datasets to promote business creation and innovation; improve citizen-facing services; and tackle an array of public policy issues. The U.S.’s OPEN Government Data Act can serve as a model for making use of governments’ data easier for researchers and developers. In this session, we hear from representatives ranging from government officials leading open government initiatives to researchers and innovators on the importance of open, machine-readable government data to finding solutions to complex public sector challenges and super-charging innovation.
