Before we dive into a full review of the OnePlus X, we thought we’d share some sample pictures straight from the device to your eyeballs. For a phone so inexpensive, you’d expect corners to be cut. But is the camera one of them? We’re not going to reveal our answer just yet. Instead, we wanted to do what we normally do, which is to present you with pictures and allow you to decide.
OnePlus says the X is built “from the most advanced sensors,” with autofocus that’s “blazingly fast.” The device sports a 13-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture, which is nice and wide for low light shooting; not the widest out there, but impressive for such an affordable device. And it means you should get some quality pictures out of this thing, which has become increasingly important in today’s mobile landscape.
Meanwhile, the device sports Phase Detection AF, which promises to focus on subjects in as little as 0.2 seconds. I’ve been using the device for the past few days, and I can indeed attest to the phone’s quick autofocus—and it’s accurate, too! Even in low light I’ve found the OnePlus X’s camera to be quick and nimble, and it mostly targets the subject I’m aiming for. You never really expect flagship quality from something so cheap, but it’s clear OnePlus really put a lot of thought into the device’s camera.
As always, this isn’t an exhaustive test of the camera’s capabilities, but it does give you an early indication of what to expect if you do decide to pick this up. At just $250 without a contract, I’m usually inclined to forgive a lack of camera quality. But based on these early samples, it looks like people will be pleased with what the OnePlus X’s camera can do.
